Time for something completely different! You might have seen that over the summer I started to get into stitching on cards, thanks to the Spellbinders* stitching dies! It had been a very long time since I picked up a needle and thread. As a young teenager I did some hand sewing alongside my Mum, as she used to make teddy bears, but despite being drawn to it a few times in the decades since, I’ve never quite made the time or had the confidence to get back into it. Enter Fergus the gnome!

Sandi MacIver has created the most adorable felt decor die sets for Spellbinders*. You can buy the basic Fergus etched die set* which gives you the dies to create the gnome, then there are two additional sets of decorative elements to customise him: Autumn & Halloween Embellishments die set* and Winter & Christmas Embellishments die set*. You can save some money by purchasing them in a bundle: Fergus 3D Felt Decor Die Collection Bundle*. The dies in the embellishment sets lend themselves to more than just those seasons/holidays, as Sandi has included flowers and leaves alongside the obvious seasonal bits.

So here we are, my first Fergus! Created thanks to the guidance of Sandi’s helpful video tutorials, which you can find HERE. I definitely needed the refresher on hand sewing.

If you’re looking for a way to get into sewing some fun 3D creations, this is a great starting point. Having the die cut pieces with stitching holes makes things really easy. I made plenty of mistakes, but Sandi’s instructions are really great at helping you through and pointing out where you need to worry about those, and where you don’t because you will be covering things with other elements. His beard is very handy at concealing things, as are the embellishments! The hat is the trickiest part, and if you follow Sandi’s videos she guides you through that part first, and once you’ve got that done, the rest is plain sailing.

I created him a snowflake staff using an acrylic rod by wrapping it with some thread, and adding some of the embellishments from the die set.

Most of the felt is from Spellbinders, but I did have some pretty white glitter felt and sparkly silver chunky glitter felt in my stash from several years ago when I thought I would use glitter felt and never got round to it. Happy I hoarded it all now!
