On Monday I shared 3 Ways to Colour Beards with Copic Markers. Today I’ve got a similar post and video for you, but showing how I colour beards with coloured pencils! Watch my video to find out how I like to colour beards with coloured pencil.

As with the Copic marker version, even if gnomes aren’t your thing, this video will still be useful. The techniques work for any fur or hair texture. The approaches I share are the same ones I use to colour yetis, polar bears, and other animal images, as well as hair and beards on other characters like Father Christmas!

Here’s a close look at the final results – I think they are all effective. My personal favourite is the third one, which is yours?

Stamps Used: Gnomes Have Feelings Too

I stamped the images on my favourite paper for coloured pencil – Bockingford Hot Pressed Watercolour Paper* before colouring using Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils*, which tend to be my “go to” coloured pencils. I also used paper blending stumps* and Winsor & Newton Sansodor solvent*.

With coloured pencil work, a sharp tip is essential, and a good pencil sharpener is invaluable. I use the Mobius & Ruppert solid brass dual action sharpener* as seen in the photo above. If you’re looking for a good pencil sharpener, this one is my favourite, but you can get a good look at this one and some of the others I’ve tried in my Best Sharpeners for Coloured Pencil post.

Polychromos Pencils Used:

Skin: Dark Sepia, Light Ultramarine, Cinnamon, Light Flesh Beards: Dark Sepia, Warm Grey III, Warm Grey I, Ivory
Hats/Clothes: Caput Mortuum Violet, Dark Red, Deep Red / Chrome Oxide Green, Pine Green, Permanent Green
